Here is a rendering of what the front of the building will look like under the current plans to convert the building into apartments. At least they are keeping the general structure of the original facade.
I have recently heard that due to financial hardship from the consortiums funding this ‘Triangle’ project and due to the economic climate, that the project is no longer going ahead – and so too have the $20million dollar plans to restore the theatre.
This is a beautifully restored theatre and is worth a visit to catch a movie, the main theatre has some of the comfiest seats around. As bercy mentioned, some friendly and knowledgeable FOH staff along with a perfect venue creates a relaxed movie going experience.
I drove past this cinema not long ago and it is still there as a club of some sort, i looks as though the front has been covered over in the 1950’s or 60’s. So possibly the exterior is still in tact underneath. Good work digging that photo out lost memory – was great to see it.
This theatre has been sold for $4million and has a permit to be demolished unfortunately. The Art Deco society here has tried to save the theatre but it looks not to have worked. Does anyone have any photo’s of what this place looks like on the inside – or what it did look like? I live almost right behind it and always wonder what its interior is/was like.

I take the last comment back – this link above is of the Coburg Plaza Theatre.
I think this might be an interior photo, its from 1934, the year it was converted to a cinema. Any thoughts?

Here’s a link to the former Northcote Theatre, now known as the Regal Ballroom. Nice job on the restoration!! Good to see.
