This is what happened to the once beautiful Astoria Theatre in Astoria, Queens, NY. It became a gym and retail stores; however, it is on a main street of shopping. But it’s ugly and a shame. What I see alot and do not fully understand, is if business is bad, why are they building so many shopping centers? And, especially when a shopping strip is boarded up on one block, another one is being built on another block. Why can’t we save some of the beautiful buildings we already have? We are running out of excuses. Crazy.

Funny, how some businesses get help from the government, think Chrysler, Stimulus Bill, and others are not allowed. As a taxpaying citizen, I would vote for neighbors helping neighbors.

This is wonderful! Too bad the Astoria Theatre on Steinway Street, in Astoria, NY couldn’t be saved years ago. It wasn’t demolished but has since turned into a gym with retail stores. I was visiting Astoria a few months ago and all I can say it is disgusting looking. I think it was built as a movie house but also had vaudeville. However, I’m not sure the exact date it was built. In the 1970’s it became a multi theatre. I guess no one cared, or perhaps, like me, were not aware of historic preservation societies.
