The Lido – 265 Court Street is now called the Cobble Hill, or at least the Cobble Hill has a 265 Court Street Address

The theater becomes stronger and stronger as others die out. In the past 2-3 years we have lost the kenmore, fortway, kingsway, marlboro, all near and close to the kent. Meanwhile, the kent is still weak as many of the shows are poorly attended. Typically 10-20 people may be in a show, and I have been to shows with 2-3 people (including myself). But sometimes a big show (popular) comes in, and the reduced rate Wednesdays also bring in some money. During the summer the theater also rents out to peoples day camp and that brings in money too.

A bit has happened in the two months. A new marquis was built, and doe not look too ugly. It just says Kent. Under the marquis and above the entrance doors is a sign that shows the movies playing. At one time they were putting up the movie times, but it looks like they stopped that.

In December I went on a Wednesday to see King Kong, and they shut down the theater for the rest of the night. Some lady (about 50 years old) was fond dead and in a box or barrel outside in the back of the theater. (in the alleyway)

Actually, both original Crazy Eddie’s" stores were located a block away. The first real original store was on Kings Highway between Coney Island Avenue and East 12th street, a small hole in the ground. That was an outgrowth of the family business, which was “crawfords” on Kings Highway and east 14th street. Eddie, when he was a kid, grew up on East 10th street between Quentin Road and Avenue P, which was effectively around the corner from both the stores and the Kingsway.

Then, crazy eddie moved into the Coney Island Avenue location, which most people belived (incorrectly) to be the first store – which was directly across the treet from the theater. At one time, this was a TSS (Time Square Store), an old chain. The entire corner had burned down due to a alarm fire in fields brothers, that also took out the TSS. The entire block had to be redeveloped. I remember a drug store chain taking one of the stores on Kings highway and attempted to compete against Kings Pharmacy, which was across the street from the theater on the corner of Kings Highway and CIA. The genevose lost, closed down, and then Kings pharamacy moved into that store, and the old Kings became a bank.

Passed by last week as first time since closing. I noticed that the fire escapes were all removed. It also appears that additional work is in progress as I see some scafolding aroiund the corner.

Some renovations. Last week the marquis was ripped apart only showing just the bare metal structure. They are going to rebuild and modernize the marquis.

There are not too any adult theaters in NYC left at all. This one is the only one I know of that is left in Brooklyn. It has private booths, so something can be worked out. There has always been adult play in this theater, however I have only seen gay men in this place and rarely couples. The guys have always played there, even though posted signs say it is not allowed. Theaters of this type are superceeded by peep shows.

If you want to play in NYC/Brooklyn. look up the Fetish Warehouse on 25th Brooklyn. (By 3rd Avenue). That is a great place to play.

First take the theater and split it in half right down the middle.
Then, take the right side and divide it in half – 120 seats in back and 141 seats in front. In-between the back half (which is really theater 3) and the left half (theather 1) is a narrow hallway that lets people get from the lobby to the front half.

I just saw Transporter 2 this weekend at the Kent. If you check through moviephone and other venues, only two films are listed (Transporter 2 and 4 Brothers). I saw on all the windos the info for the Russian film, including a 1 page description/review of the film (in Russian) (I can’t read Russian). Since I went to the first showing, I paid 4.50 for the Transporter 2 film. Normally the films will be $7.00 (less the Wednesday and first showing specials). The Russina film was $10.00.

This is not the first attempt by Kent to do films like this. A couple of years back they were doing Hindu/Indian films.

It is amazing how this theater has survived. A few years after it re-opened (after the Jewel fire) any attempt to open a XXX theater was met with stiff opposition from the local church (St Brendan) and they were shut down.

BYW: As with most NYC XXX theaters, some of you might find it strange that there are normal pictures playing there too. There is a reason. There is a 40/60 rule that says if the establishment is 60% or more non-adult, then it falls under a different law statute. If the amount is less than 60%, it is considered an adult establishment, and has to be so far from schools, residental living, etc – and no grandfathering. This is the law used to clean up Times Square.

I remember that the theater when twinned, there were two lines, one for each theater, and the consession both was in the middle so it could serve both theaters. This was control to prevent theater switching.

It is independently owned. It is rarely full, even when taking in blockbusters. It’s pricing is cheap considering $7.50 vs $8.75. It appeared to have a slight spike when the Kingsway closed. The screens are garbage, the sound is garbage, but they get many first run, and the parking isn’t that bad. Now with the Fortway closing, that is less competition. However, I think less people are just going to the movies alltogether, and that is the real killer.

How many people remember the “Stop Pay TV” promotions at the theaters back in the 1960’s! I guess they were right, cable killed the theaters. But so did VCR & DVD which weren’t even inveted back then!

When Cineplex Odem took over, they had at least three main theaters left in Brookly: Kingsway, Fortway, and Alpine. This was BEFORE the merger with Lowes. All three theaters had AC issues. The Fortway and Alpine were rennovated at least more than once, if not twice, while the Kingsway never received any renovation. The seats were old and crappy, and the place was going downhill. I spoke to a manager once, and he said that they had big plans for rennovation, but that the theater was a landmark and they were having issues with permits – which I do not believe. Cineplex Odem was also a shit chain, they had this con job with popcorn butter where they asked you if you wanted extra butter (an extra 25 cents) and they kept getting you. If you said that you didn’t want the extra butter, they would put it in anyway (or not) and charge yoyu anyway. BIG SCAM, anbd it was hard to catch it becase unlike the other chains, they charged tax on the purchase instead of showing prices with tax included. This paractice (extra butter) finally ended with the merger with Lowes.

That’s right. It was for a long time a Chase bank. It was a corner lot. Part of the naming is from the IND Train line, which is currently the F train, but back then it was the D train, and called the “culver line”. I remember my father taking me to Abbott & Costello & Three Stooges movies there, which would be before I was 5, and that is over 46 years ago.

The Cinart was north of Atlantic Avenue. The Cobble Hill is south. The Cinart and surrounding buildings were destroyed and the United Artists Court Street Stadium 12 was built on that site, along with a bookstore (I think Barnes & Noble). This would be at 108 Court Street.
