I recall that they used to show some of big boxing matches (ali vs frazier)on closed circuit tv. they used to charge $30 a head which was an insane price back then and still sell out the place.
I was surprized to see that this theatre opened back in 1928. When i went there back in the 70s it looked a lot newer then most of the other brooklyn theatres that i used to go to.
And in those days most theatres had smokeing sections like in the last 5 rows so the aroma of a lit spliff always filled the air at the kent.Nothing like a good spliff and an bud while watching those b films back then.
i lived and worked in the area back in the 70s and early 80s. it was a good cheap date to take the girlfriend on a weeknite to see 2 movies. as i recall the snack bar was only open on the weekends so we had to sneak in our snacks and 6 pack in her pocketbook. they had vending machines that always ripped you off. the soda machine had a cup that came down and the syrup and carbination would pour down into it. sometime you would just get the syrup or just the cup with nothing.my next trip to ny i must visit this place. i cant believe this place survives with all the other brooklyn theatres that have closed over the years. i also cant believe how this could be a triplex now when it was so small in the first place.
I moved to the area back in 1996 when the theatre was still open. the charge was only 99cents for films that were out about 3 months earlier. the place was located in the back corner of a shopping center not visable from the parking lot. A furnature store took over the site about 2 years ago. the theatre had the worst popcorn i ever had in any theatre. the butter was like watered down to make it a soggy mess lol
I used to bowl there back in the 70s and played bingo at the casa del rey. The marque was still attached to the building so i figured it was once a movie theatre. The 2nd floor was a bar . also there was a great chinese restaurant THE NEW TOY SUN located between the 2 places.
I saw adam west and burt ward on stage there when the batman movie came out sometime in the late 60s
