The Metro always showed movies made by independent film makers…
When I was about 8 years old in ‘45, I put a penny in the automatic pop machine that cost a nickel… and to my surprise a cup came out
and filled up.,when I took it out… another cup came down and filled up…and then another, and I got scared and went back into the movie expecting the theater was going to be flooded. That was the last time I ever tried that!

In the summer of 1951, I was first in line to see Milton Berle and buxom Dagmar… after staying for 4 shows… Uncle Miltie had me kicked out of the theater for heckling him! A few years later I watched a film with Jeff Chandler and Joan Crawford, and a stage show that had Patti Page and Bill Halley and the Comets on the same bill for a buck!

I lived a block away during the 40s and early 50s, There were 2 other movie theaters near by, the Terminal on Lawrence just a block away from the beginning of the Ravenswood el, and across the street the Metro.Their screen was behind you when you walked into the theater.
After movies played downtown, they then went to the Uptown at Lawrence and Broadway, then to the Terminal and finally the Alba. I remember when it was converted to a bowling alley. I even set a few pins there! I learned something from your site… that ALBA was short for Albany Park…
