As a result of the Cinerama conversion, the Plaza Theatre’s old Wurlitzer organ was sold. Here we see the console sitting in a private residence at Harris Park,NSW. The organ was original to the theatre being purchased in 1938 from the Wintergarden Theatre Brisbane.
One of two theatres in Australia converted to Cinerama in 1958. A result of the conversion was the 75ft wide screen covering the original proscenium. Seating was also reduced to 1,017. The second Cinerama theatre was located in Melbourne also called the Plaza Theatre with smaller but almost identical architecture to the Sydney edifice.
I wish to make a slight change on the above information. The Regent Theatre was only ever leased to Hoyts Theatres Ltd until 1932.It was owned by Albury Amusments Pty. Ltd. Until recent decades it was operated as an independent cinema. Now operated by Village Theatres.Seating was originally 1,374.
Hoyts built a new modern cinema in 1937(circa) in Olive Street which seated 1,168 patrons. Long closed and demolished.
IN 2016 the Beverly Hills Cinemas were renamed GU FILM HOUSE. A new brand of cinema experience favoring smaller complexes. The other two GU FILM HOUSE cinemas are in South Australia. One in Adelaide City and the other at Glenelg.
