It was still operating as a church when I lived in the neighborhood in the 1980’s. One friend told me he’d go there to watch double-features in the 60’s.
Good hearing the stories from Frank M’s son. I knew the man in the 1980’s when I scheduled some film society showings at the Studio 35. Frank told me the theater never should’ve been built. The location was wrong for it. Well, maybe it wasn’t a good spot then, but it’s doing great today. Hope it continues.
He also mentioned the place was built by a man who was a floor-walker at one of the department stores in Columbus.
Didn’t “Billy Jack” play here for an absurd run? Like 35 weeks? I remember this because the sequel didn’t play this location on release. Guess Mr. Mills was not happy…
There’s a story that Jerry Lewis quit making movies after he spotted his film “Which Way to the Front?” playing on a double bill with “Deep Throat”. It’s probably just a story, but you have to wonder if it wasn’t inspired by a Jerry Lewis Theater switching to adult films after the franchise went bust.
Something wrong with his information. I have a friend who remembers going to this drive-in in the early 1980s. Before the current strip mall was erected on the site around 2000
, you could still drive back beyond the entrance and see the parking area outline.
I recall going to see NIGHTMARE ON ELM STREET on a double bill with NIGHT OF THE COMET when I moved to St.Louis in 1984. It was super cold outside and I kept looking up to the roof thinking the tile was going to fall down on me. But I enjoyed the show and thought about this theater when I heard the director of NIGHTMARE had passed away.
Saw quite a few off-beat movies there in the 70’s and 80’s. “Dawn of the Dead” and “Polyester” come to mind.

Interior. The place was busy. Do different than what it was 40 years ago.
Drove by a few weeks ago. Doesn’t appear to be open. A shame. I saw ET there in the early 80’s.
Saw “Murder on the Orient Express” here when it was first released in 1974. Many fond memories of this theater.

Strange. I can remember seeing the ad for the above three movies in the Columbus paper.

Very nice interior.
I’m guessing this is from its adult phase.
It’s a shame there are no photographs of this theater when it was open.
