The Marlow’s Theatre that was formerly known as the Hippodrome was located in Herrin, not Murphysboro, Illinois. The Marlow’s in Murphysboro was operated by the brother of the man who owned and operated the one in Herrin. The Hippodrome burned in the 1930’s and was rebuilt as “Marlow’s Fireproof Theatre” in the same spot. The building was demolished in the late 1960’s to make way for a municipal parking lot. The Murphysboro Marlow’s was still in operation into the early 1970’s.
I saw a Supertramp concert at the St. Louis Fox Theater in 1974 or 1975. It was an imposing palace even in its decline. Good to hear that the place has since been restored.
I recall catching a double bill midnight show in September 1972 of “The Maltese Falcon” and “Casablanca” at the Fox Eastgate. The big surprise was that the final scene of “Casablanca” was missing from the print! The theater was across the street from the Golden Bear Pancake House, now also long departed from the Carbondale landscape.
The Varsity theater in Carbondale, Illinois is mentioned by a character in the 1980’s television series “Fame”, as the place where the school principal served as an usher while in college in the early 1950’s. From the conviction with which the line was delivered one gets the feeling that either the actor in question or the writer of that scene actually had that particular life experience.
The Egyptian is now demolished but one can still discern the pattern worn into the earth of the parking configuration, clearly visible on Google Earth. It’s a crying shame that Herrin, IL lost the Annex, Marlow’s, the Riviera Drive In AND the Egyptian so long ago. The Egyptian was a gem of a drive-in theatre in its day.
