Map showing the location of The Palace Cinema (The Rink)
This shows the small hamlet, just south of Westhoughton railway station, built for the workers of Chadwick’s silk mill. (Here shown as Peel Mills) There was already a Weslyan chapel and public house, so a skating rink was built for recreational purposes. As the mill changed hands and products, so too The Rink became The Palace Cinema. One aspect of my previous comment is clearly shown to be incorrect. The building was single storey and the billiard hall was situated to the rear, behind the screen, and not upstairs as stated.
