During the 1940’s and 50’s it was the place to see Tarzan and Flash Gordon serials. The films on show were always very old and not the standard that most other cinemas would show. Invariably the were old RKO productions
I lived about 3 hundred yards from the Empire so on the way home I could visit Brooks’s fish shop on the Broad Flags. From the age of 11 to about 14 my cousin was the cashier and on more than one occasion she said “go on through”.
Among my early memories was the commissionaire Mr Scholey, he wore the full regalia and no one messed about when he was around. I well remember a lad started to clap to the music beat in “Rock around the clock”
and he was immediately ejected. Another memory was the “Coming soon” posters in the foyer and waiting for the film “High Noon” my memory tells me that it was coming for about 18 months.
Happy days
For man years this was my favourite cinema (“pictures”)
I was born in 1938 and my nearest cinema was the Empire on Wakefield Road but even at the age of about 5 when I probably started going, I knew that the Majestic was much classier.
it was also a penny dearer, 4 pence as opposed to 3 pence at he Empire
