Located in Normanton, West Yorkshire. The Majestic Cinema was opened in Autumn of 1931. It had a 28 feet wide proscenium and was equipped with an Electrocord sound system. In 1936 it was taken over by the Leeds based Star Cinemas chain, and they fitted a Western Electric(WE) sound system.
Star Cinemas operated the Majestic Cinema until they closed it in 1964. The building was demolished in 2005, and the site is a car park for the adjacent Asda supermarket inside the former swimming baths.

When I took the attached photo in February 2005 it was cordoned off and preparatory work prior to demolition looked to have started. I imagine it was demolished later that year. The former swimming baths on the left was converted into an ASDA supermarket and the cinema site is the store’s car park.

MAJESTIC
For man years this was my favourite cinema (“pictures”) I was born in 1938 and my nearest cinema was the Empire on Wakefield Road but even at the age of about 5 when I probably started going, I knew that the Majestic was much classier. it was also a penny dearer, 4 pence as opposed to 3 pence at he Empire
The Electrocord sound system (without the ‘h’) was from Butchers who also produced British B films. I suspect it was a flawed system as it always seems to have been replaced after a few years, usually by Western Electric. Buy cheap, buy twice!
After closure by Star, the auditorium area was flattened and used as a municipal workshop to repair and service the fleet of bin wagons and the like operated by the council.
