In Normanton, to the north-east of Wakefield, West Yorkshire, the Assembly Rooms were built in 1889. In 1910 a Cinematograph Licence was granted to H. Gooder for shows in the main hall. By July 1912 these were being presented, more formally, by Messrs. Dobito and Buxton, who provided a mixture of variety and films as the Picture Palace.
The Picture Palace was subsequently taken over by Greene’s Pictures Ltd. Then, in 1920, it was acquired by Normanton Theatres Ltd, a company whose directors included John Greene and William Burton. At some time the name was updated to the Palace Cinema.
In around 1929-1930, Normanton Theatres purchased the Assembly Rooms, including two shops, from Normanton Assembly Rooms Company, demolished the existing buildings and replaced them with the Majestic Cinema. That opened in the autumn 1931, and has its own page on Cinema Treasures.
