National Amusements' two remaining drive-in theaters will open this year
BURTON, MI and LOUISVILLE, KY — The last two remaining drive-in theaters out of many operated by National Amusements will open for the season.
While National Amusements does not maintain web sites for each of these drive-ins, individual webmasters unaffiliated with National Amusements are maintaining drive-in web sites on their own.
This contributor, Gary Flinn who is not connected with any drive-in theater, maintains a web page devoted to the Miracle Twin DI in Burton, MI outside Flint. The Miracle Twin DI will open for the season on April 20. The management of this drive-in has an April special. During the month of April, admission is $10 a carload!
The webmaster for the Kenwood DI in Louisville, KY is Rosalind Causey who is also not connected in any way with this drive-in. Her Kenwood DI web site is located here. The Kenwood DI will open for the season on May 4.
National Amusements was founded by Michael Redstone who operated a chain of drive-in theaters beginning with the Sunrise DI in the mid-1930s. The chain was expanded by his son Sumner Redstone who is now chairman of both CBS and Viacom. Sumner Redstone entered the indoor theater business which quickly overtook the drive-in business. Many of his indoor theaters were built on former sites of drive-ins including the Sunrise Multiplex Cinemas where the Sunrise DI used to be. Sumner’s daughter, Shari Redstone, now runs National Amusements.
