Imperial Theatre
At left is one of the first bookings for the Imperial under Newman Theatres which also operated Waco’s Orpheum launching February 4, 1955 but closing in 1962. The Imperial becomes the Waco Evangelistic Center early in 1963 (top right ad). The Mitchells including Leroy later of Cinemark take on the theater but it’s no use as downtown theaters are too plentiful for the patrons. It closes in October of 1965. But in December of 1970, the theater gets one more chance as the Roxie Adult Theater (bottom right). But police raids which occur daily are aimed at harassing the theater operators into closing. That tactic is successful and the theater closes after two tumultuous months.
