Local postmaster W. Newton was regarded as the ‘founder’ of the Mechanics/Literary Institute in Lawson, having hosted the first meeting of like minds in June 1896. As a tribute to his ongoing efforts, the committee decided to use the name Newton Hall when they applied for a Theatres and Public Halls Act license in July 1909. Although retained for some years in official documentation, the name ‘Newton Hall’ failed to achieve common usage.
