Victory Theatre
No, not the Arcadia foyer! This is a real picture palace - Union Theatres’ magnificent Sydney State (1929) with the Managing Director’s name later etched in the entrance stonework. Motion picture empire builder Stuart Frank Doyle (1887 – 1945) had actually grown up in Blackheath. His younger brother Ralph went into film distribution, heading RKO Australasia for many years. Ralph was also a director of Blue Mountains Amusements which ran the Katoomba cinemas. Just a few days after their mother was laid to rest in Blackheath Cemetery on 17th July 1934, Ralph Raymond Doyle took out a lease on the Blackheath cinema.
