Times Theater

1249 Stockton Street, San Francisco, Originally opened as the Acme Theatre in 1910, this small neighborhood nickelodeon served San Francisco’s North Beach district. On March 10, 1949, it reopened as the Times Theatre, with a more modern front, but more or less the same familiar policy of bottom price, last-run film fodder. On August 1, 1969, it was taken over by Mike Thomas and Gary Meyer who introduced repertory film programming with daily film changes and a modest printed calendar. Severely handicapped by the notoriously difficult neighborhood parking situation, the theatre closed on December 26, 1976, and was converted into retail stores. (From Jerry Whitney FB).

I lived about 12 blocks away in 1970/71 - so I always walked. Just about everything I saw there at that time had a near full house. Admission was $1 or so. And…remember seeing the double bill shown in the photo. The “Muni Love Bus” was filmed in GG Park and X rated. A bit of a scandal at the time that a city bus was rented for a porn film with the Muni driver allegedly not noticing what was going on as he drove around.
