Lindsay Anderson appeared in person at the Cable Car Cinema in Providence on November 28, 1977. He was a great film and theatre director who made movies like “If”, “This Ssporting Life,” “O Lucky Man”, “The Whales of August,” I was just an area film-buff who happened to attend this event and tried to assist Mr. Anderson with the projection of his early shorts in 35mm which he brought with him for his seminar at nearby RISD. We were in the booth together. Unfortunately the then-new cinema did not have the correct lens or aperture plate to show the older films properly, which was an embarassment to the event sponsors and an annoyance to Mr. Anderson. Four years later, after starting the Italian Film Society of RI, I had to obtain and utilize such plate and lens on my own (from the former Johnston Theatre owner) in order to show some older films without cutting ihe top and bottom of the image.
