Quonset Hut Movie Theaters

Named for Quonset, Rhode Island, where these prefab metal structures were originally manufactured during WW II, the Quonset Hut was designed for use for the armed forces as it was portable, easy to erect, and inexpensive. The Quonset hut was loosely modeled on the Iroquois Indian council lodge, and featured rows of semi-circular steel beams covered with corrugated metal sheets and came in various sizes. Used in the war for housing, MASH units, and warehouses, the huts were used after the war for single-family housing, dormitories, small businesses, and of course, movie theaters.
