As with all family run businesses (i.e. Mann Theaters), the owner died leaving his property to his children. The problem was there were 5 siblings some were in financial dire straits and there you have it folks! Sell, sell, sell. 65 years up in smoke! Shame really 😭😭🍞😳🫤😡
The Drive-In is now, sadly, permanently closed, the on-site weekend swap-meet will continue until June 2024.
Couldn’t that developer find someplace else in Santee to build the large industrial building?
Final day of operation announced as December 31, 2023.
The East County Magazine reported today that the Santee Drive-In is in escrow to a developer from Los Angeles. That developer has filed an application with the city to build a large industrial building on the site.
Michael Coyne, Santee’s principal planner, said the drive-in’s owners are laying low. “They don’t want to answer questions about the closing of the drive-in theater.” He also said that because of documentation and necessary reports, the project wouldn’t go to the city council for approval for at least six months.
ADDRESS CORRECTION: 10990 North Woodside Avenue, Santee, CA 92071. Without north, this will not map properly.
A few years ago I scored many wonderful old movies (An Affair to Remember, The Third Man, etc) on VHS at the swap meet this drive in hosts. Very exciting.
Someone might want to change the address to 10990 Woodside Avenue North, as 10990 Woodside Avenue puts you on the wrong side of the freeway in Google Maps.
