Martin’s clothing store is now closed. It’s now a butterfly salon and spa
This structure was built in 1896 according to vision appraisal.
I found more info on this theatre at the Danbury Museum while doing unrelated research.
The theater was at 253 Main Street and was called the “Casassa Vaudeville Theater” which operated from 1908-1914.
I’m very happy today. I was doing research at the Danbury Museum for an unrelated project the last few days and found many pictures of the Palace, Capitol and Empress Theatres, and not just the traditional “Images of America” book pictures. I’ve found countless viewspoints including aerial!!!
I did find a large book of maps from 1909 that had very exact parcels of houses and businesses. The Casassa was listed and I snapped some pics.
Unfortunately, I cannot post pics still, so I’ll send them over to Roger Katz. For folks interested in these great black and white and some color photos, I’d be happy to email them to you in a zipped file. They are great.
when i googled Casassa, it was an old Italian surname. Throughout many directories through the 40s and 50s, there was an Eleanore Casassa who was a music teacher and clerk. Her clerk address was 7 White Street and her home was at 19 Spring Street. Her husband Frank Casassa was a newsdealer at the time at his office was at 9 White Street. I presume it was their theater.
