The Woodsville Opera house showed movies in the Twenties, Thirties and possibly Forties, according to Woodsville native Shirley P. Cobb. It stands in the center of Woodsville and has a large three faced clock tower. It currently houses some retail shops and apartments.

The caption of the photo link posted above by Neal G says that the Opera Block was constructed in 1890. There is a theatre listed under Woodsville NH in the 1897-98 edition of the Julius Cahn Official Theatrical Guide. However, it’s not the Opera House, but the “Music Hall”. I don’t know if they are one in the same. According to the Guide, the Music Hall had 600 seats, and was on the second floor of its building. The proscenium opening was 21 feet wide x 18 feet high, and the stage was 22 feet deep. Quincy Scott was the Mgr. Local hotels were the Wentworth, Johnson and Parker House. The population of Woodsville was given as 1,300.
This postcard shows a theater on Central Street, but the theater is part of the Hotel Henderson.

Yeah, nice that they saved the curtain and chandelier. Too bad they couldn’t have left it where it was and restored the Opera House!

My son Nate Swain recently found several movie announcement posters from the Tegu’s Orpheum Theatre. They were under the linoleum in the third floor apartment at the former Palace Theatre building (now Room 111 at Victory Lanes). Some titles are: Sky Giant, Little Miss Broadway, Hold That Kiss, and Painted Desert. Really good condition.
