Boxoffice, July 21, 1951: “In a further breakup of the Huish Theatre circuit, Vincent A. Gilhool, manager and operator, has announced sale of two more showhouses. Latest theatres to be disposed of are the Huish and Lyric at Richfield, Utah, to Vern Anderson, operator at Salina. The former, built in memory of the late C. A. Huish, was opened only a couple of years ago. An 800-seat house, it was one of the most elaborate, small-town houses in the west. The latter is a 650-seat theatre. Anderson announced that the houses, particularly the Lyric, would be remodeled.”
I love the huish theater. It was the only theater I knew growing up. It was recently gutted and turned into a 3 plex. there are 2 theaters in the original auditorium and the 3rd is the old balcony. There is a lot of history in this building and in the very back of the building behind a door in the emergency exit hallway, is a large room that has the original stage and screen with some art deco decorations which was walled over in the 80s. I’m glad they kept this part from being gutted like the rest of the theater.
Currently closed for remodeling, scheduled to reopen June 2010.
SLIGHT NAME CHANGE: Huish REEL is how the sign now reads. A lighted box sign with the word REEL has been added below the Huish neon sign. Huish Enterprizes opened the theatre and Reel Theatres took over the theatre sometime between 2000 and 2003.
