Newspaper ad from Aug. 15, 1945 Chicago Herald-American showing what was playing at the Webster Theater

This theater was listed as open with seating for 800 in the 1945 Film Daily Yearbook. It stood on N. Damen Avenue between W. Webster Avenue and W. Shakespeare Avenue, very close to where the Kennedy Expressway passes through today. The theater closed around 1950 and demolished during the mid-1960s.

The Theatre was demolished in the mid 60’s. I had looked inside once just prior to demolition. There was a big doorway – possibly for loading and un-loading built into a side wall. It was rather small and the floor had been leveled.

Does anyone know about another theatre just a few doors north of the WEBSTER, once called the JINGLES. Probably during the days before Damen Ave was called Damen—it was known as “Robey”. I’ll be digging around for something on it myself. Thank you.

In the 60s for a short period, the building was used as a Produce store. After demolition, a Amoco gas station occupied the site for many years. Currently (2010) the site has a multistory retail/condo building under construction.

Old newspaper ads have the address for the Webster Theatre as 2158. But newspapers have been known to make mistakes.
