The Oceanwest Theatre is located at Champlin’s Marina at New Harbor, on the opposite side of the island from Old Harbor, where ferries arrive from Point Judith and New London.
The building has a functional plain exterior, with a front of corrugated metal and beach-shingles. There is a garage-door along with several regular doors on the building’s front. The theatre has been used for dramatic productions and for movies during the summer season. It was closed in 2020.

Here is a 2004 photo of the Oceanwest Theatre.
The theatre doesn’t have any real charm like the older Empire Theatre at Old Harbor and is less accessible than the Empire and is rather haphazard about promotion. There was no poster or exterior sign indicating Stealth was playing here when I went to see it. During the entire movie, the house lights were only half-dimmed, resulting in an over-bright house and creating an annoying glare on the screen. The screen had an irregular-edged black border. The sound seemed to emit from one inadequate overhead speaker. I counted approximately 175 seats in the theatre. The audience for the Sunday night movie consisted almost entirely of about 10 teenagers.
A friend of mine sent me a link to a craigslist ad for a theater on Block Island looking for a projectionist. I am wondering if it is for this one or the Empire at the Old Harbor.

I would love the opportunity to say out on Block Island for the summer in isolation and cinema.
I will be in Block Island next Wed on a bike vacation. I plan to stop by at both places and take pictures and perhaps take in a movie.
PERMANENTLY CLOSED! (According to Block Island websites.)
The theater looks to be a very “Plain Jane” building. Nothing special.
