Centrepiece of the auditorium ceiling is the ‘Koh-i-Nor’, claimed to be the second largest hand-cut crystal chandelier in the world – weighing over four tons. It was reportedly made in Czechoslovakia at a cost of 3000 pounds, and is a replica of one found in the Habsburg Emperor’s Hofburg Palace (Vienna). It is 25 ft. high, 16 ft. in diameter, and contains 300 lights. Sam Hood photo - Mitchell Library collection.
