Although the venue was lucky enough to only suffer minor smoke damage, the building will be closed for a days to clean up. per https://www.boston25news.com/news/local/hundreds-evacuated-historic-new-hampshire-performance-center-mid-concert-due-raging-fire/AYFAHCWXCVDQLJHZ6TOLFDQU7E/
Burned down last night
The news says it’s currently on fire :(
I saw Murder By Death here in the 80s. Vacationed in the area in the early sixties. Remember a faded light blue exterior.
The Theatre Historical Society archive has the MGM Theatre Report for this theater when it was the Plymouth; it’s Card # 506. Address is Main St. There is an exterior photo taken April 1941. Condition is Good. The report says it opened about 1931, is showing MGM movies, and has 723 seats. The 1940 population is 2,500.
475 seats now.
Although it is primarily a live performance venue, the Flying Monkey does still feature the occasional movie. There is a full service dining menu available during performances.
It no longer has 2 screens, it is a single performance space.
What a name!!!!!
The theatre closed Sept. 2009 and was recently sold to a local restaurant owner. I will keep you up to date with his plans when they are available.
In the 1942-43 edition of the Motion Picture Almanac, the Plymouth Theatre was listed as being operated by Interstate Theatres Corp. of Boston. Interstate also ran the Music Hall in Plymouth. Other New Hampshire theaters run by Interstate at that time were the Liberty in Ashland; the Bristol in Bristol; the Rialto in Lancaster; the Charkarohen in Lincoln; the Corliss in North Woodstock; and the Colonial and the Scenic in Rochester. Interstate also ran movie theaters in VT, MA and CT.
It was operated by Interstate Theaters out of Boston in the fifties
