The Bijou Theatre opened on February 10, 1906 and was located on East Washington Street at Pennsylvania Street. It is claimed by Indianapolis historians that the Bijou was the first movie theatre in the city. C.L. Sutherland of Milwaukee was the owner of this and other early Indianapolis movie theatres. It was later owned by Walter Bowlby and Charles Cook who also controlled the Park Theatre on Washington.
Prior to being a movie theatre the building was used as a wax figure museum and later a penny arcade.
The Bijou was one of the last movie theatres to add sound. The Bijou closed on December 25, 1941.
