There has been an urban legend that THE GREAT DICTATOR had its Chicago premiere at the Ramova Theatre and Music Box Theatre because the downtown theatres were hesitant to screen the movie due to its subject matter. Not true. THE GREAT DICTATOR premiered downtown like any other big movie back then. It premiered at the Apollo Theatre and Roosevelt Theatre on October 31, 1940.
