Madison Theatre in 1955

The Madison Theatre opened near Madison Avenue and N. Cleveland Street in 1926. The display in the photograph appears in a 1955 newspaper advertisement and is a modernization. Not much else is remembered, and this view is the only image that has come to light. It closed and was demolished in 1963, replaced by a parking lot.

This webpage has a little more information, two advertisements (which will enlarge if clicked upon), and an aerial view of the theater’s former site.

The Robert-Morton Theatre Pipe Organ was a 2/ (manual/ keyboard/) and cost $10,000. Does anyone know what happened to the organ? In 1939 the manager was Tom Ballas. Open till the 1960’s.

The photo posted was taken from a composite ad of neighborhood movie theatres printed in the Press-Scimitar in their 75th anniversary edition Wednesday, October 12, 1955. Memphis Public Library and Information Center, used with permission. The only photo I have come across in my research.
