The Bakhtar Cinema reopened for the first time in more than five years in November 2001. As the Northern Alliance entered the city and the Taliban fled, Kabul residents poured into the 586-seat movie house for screenings of “Urudj and Elan”. Despite this new sense of freedom in Kabul, women were still not allowed into the cinema.
It was privately operated and is located in front of the Ministry of Justice. It screened East Indian movies.
The Bakhtar Cinema was closed in August 2021 due to the Taliban regaining control of the country. It is not know when-or-if it will reopen again.
