Belmar Mall opened theatre-less in 1963. In 1971, an automated theatre was added when the Belmar Cinema launched at 829 Plaza. The 344-seat cinema opened August 18, 1971 with the film, “Love Story.” In 1979, picketers protested the playing of “Life of Brian” at the Belmar. The facility became the Man Ray Cinema on January 1, 1980. The Man Ray appears to have closed January 15, 1981 after a showing of “Elephant Man” likely fulfilling a 10-year lease.
Hmmmm, know both Carney’s ,Jr (when I rebuilt his mustangs motor with your help} and Sr' when he gave his OK to “Break him in”. Was close to all, even you, Sawtooth. Was the manager and projectionist there with Thumper…..Been away for a good many year. Was also the projectionist at Neptune City, Eatontown Drive-In and Middlebrook. Never forget the Throckmortons.
Bob Hankins was the projectionist there, and I was there one night when he was in the auditorium talking to the manager, the reel alarm bell went off, and the reel ran out while he was not in the booth. He ran and got things going again in barely a minute.
I liked the place, nice and comfortable, good quality presentations. Gil Carney Sr. did the sound system, so it was top shelf.
I remember my older sisters going to see Rocky Horror every weekend in the 70’s. It was quite an event at the time.
I caught The Empire Strikes Back there right before it closed. They had an incredible sound system.
