Correction: It was never renamed Capital 12 Theatres nor expanding to 12 screens in 2006/07. The Capital 8 has been an eight-screen theater throughout its entire history. This was due to the fact that the Capital 8 and Capital 4 are really close to each other to the Capital Mall.
The signage says Capital 12 Theatres, but the main theater still has its original eight screens and its Capital 8 Theatres name because the nearby Capital 4 Theatres was still operating at the time. They still kept the Capital 12 Theatres sign in front of Truman Blvd after the August 2009 closure of the Capital 4 until 2011 when the sign reverted back to its normal Capital 8 name.
Capital 8 Theatres closed March 16, 2020 along with all of the Goodrich Theatre Circuit’s portfolio due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Goodrich then declared bankruptcy ceasing operations.
The theatre reopened under new management of GQT Movies Circuit on August 14, 2020 as the GQT Capital 8. (Mason Asset Management and Namdar Realty Group purchased the bankrupt circuit with partner VIP Cinemas taking over operation of 22 former Goodrich Quality Theatre locations including the Oxford location. GQT Movies' home office is located in Kentwood, Michigan.) This entry should be listed as Formerly Operated by Goodrich Quality Theaters and Operated by GQT Movies.
The Capital 8 Theatres seat a total of 1,554, according to this page of the web site of Thorp Associates, the architectural firm that designed the project.
