Rio Theater

Located on NW 4th Street (now renamed Sgt. Paredez Street). The Rio Theatre was a Quonset Hut style theatre, which opened in 1947 screening Spanish language movies. It can be seen in the opening sequence of the 1969 movie “Midnight Cowboy” with John Voight walking past it.

It has been demolished and the site was vacant until 2024 when a car wash began to operate on the site.

the 1982 photo does not seem to be the Rio Theatre that was in the opening credits sequence of the movie “Midnight Cowboy”. Jon Voight walks right past it within the first 2 minutes of the film. It has a different marquee sign. Note that it appears to be the jumbled title of the movie “The Alamo” with John Wayne. check it out.

You can change this to demolished. They leveled the whole block.

Was definitely in the movie “Midnight Cowboy”. That’s “him”, right side of the capture above, carrying the suitcase.
