City Lights Cinema

This is the only adult movie theatre operating in Malta. It is located on St. John Street within the small City Lights Arcade in the ancient part of the city. The City Lights Cinema uses the former balcony seating area of the Capitol Cinema.

The City Lights Cinema is location in part of the balcony of the former 1930’s Capitol Cinema. All of Valletta’s old cinemas have closed, this may be the one with any of the original decor surviving as the rest (Savoy, Embassy, Coliseum and Imperial) have either been completely demolished or totally gutted inside.

I visited the City Lights during the CTA visit to Malta in May 2012. ‘Divina’, an Italian sex film (softcore version) was playing on a loop. The friendly proprietor allowed me to take photos!

I visited Valletta three times in 1968-69 with the US Navy. I recall seeing movies in an old building where the theater was on the second floor and seating was folding chairs. Does anyone here know what its name was and does it still exist? I remember seeing Peter Sellers in “A Shot in the Dark” and Gary Cooper in “High Noon” in that theater. Tom in Texas

While on holiday in Malta in February 2018 I was pleased, but not a little surprised, in these days of the internet, to find that the City Lights is still operating, showing softcore adult films throughout the day. Not only that, but, having been re-acquainted with the owner, I was delighted when he proudly showed me the Cinema Bar he has constructed in an adjacent, ground floor space, which, I gathered, only opened very recently. The seating consists of old tip-up cinema seats, and films are shown on a drop-down screen. This is a very imaginative use of this space, and I wished him well with this additional venture.
