The January 6, 1940 issue of Boxoffice had this item: “Remington— The Rem, operated entirely by local merchants and tradesmen, has opened under management of Howard A. Hyer.”
Harold and Elizabeth Heyer of the Moroko Theatre in nearby Morocco opened the Rem Theatre on November 4, 1939 with “Espionage Agent” and “Bad Little Angel.” Vada and Charles E. Lane took on the theatre in 1953 and closed it at the end of lease in 1973.
My parents lived 2 blocks from the REM theater when I was born. I saw my first movies here, until we moved when I was nine, in 1952. I remember many, like “Harvey (Jimmy Stewart) and "The Red Badge Of Courage” (Audie Murphy). The REM was on the east side of S. Ohio St (our “main street”). The REM had subdued pastel floor lighting, in hues of red and orange. There was always a Movietone newsreel and a cartoon, plus previews of Coming Attractions, and sometimes a short film (I recall Abbott & Costello, “Whose On First?” and a big band or two, with vocalists). There were often drawings for gifts on Wed. nights. In Dec. the grade school children would all walk from the school to the REM to watch a special Christmas movie or cartoon feature. Afterwards, each of us received a paper bag of candy and an orange. We boys often walked to the REM to see a western or a comedy. What fun we had! Please note: Your Remington map is for a town in Virginia, not Indiana!
On the FindAGrave website, I found information about Charles E. Lane who owned and operated the Rem Theater. The article says the theater was at the corner of Ohio and South Streets in Remington. Here is the information on Mr Lane. I recently visited Remington and found the theater has been torn down. It looks like the small building (seen to the right of the theater in both links above), which is now the home to the Pizza King (105 S. Ohio St.), has expanded to occupy the theater’s land.
