The State Cinema opened 14th May 1937 with William Powell in “Libelled Lady”. Located in the Shettleston district of Glasgow’s East End, the State was the biggest and grandest cinema in the area.
It was popular ‘family’ cinema and had an uneventful life, but attendance was hit by the introduction of Value Added Tax(VAT) on cinema admissions in 1972 and closed on 4th May 1973 when a full house turned out to see Bruce Lee in “Enter the Dragon”.
The building stood empty and decaying for 13 years until it was demolished in 1986. A Halfords store now stands on the site.
