The story about the Texas Chainsaw Massacre listed at the top of the page is true. I was a child when that happened–my mother is from there–and the story spread through town like wildfire. I was actually going to post it here and see it is already here.
I remember being dropped off here on more than one occasion to see a movie while my mom and her sister went shopping. I saw Charlotte’s Web here but can’t remember any more specific titles.
The NRHP registration form for the Sandersville Commercial and Industrial Historic District says that the new Pastime Theatre opened at this location in 1938. It replaced the smaller Pastime that had operated on Malone Street since 1911.
An earlier Pastime Theatre at Sandersville was listed in the 1914-1915 American Motion Picture Directory, unfortunately with no address given.
Opening date is wrong. There is no building on this lot on the December 1923 Sanborn. The style of the facade looks more like something from the ‘30s. If there was an earlier Pastime, it was somewhere else.
Status should be: Closed.
Mike the other theatre you are talking about is the Arcade Theatre and it listed on CT
there was also another theatre downtown not far from here, don’t know why its not on here…
I have a bunch of stuff, but most of it comes from theatres I worked at, when they went dark I would go in a grab what I wanted before the wrecking ball got there, the best thing is to get off the beaten path on the back roads and run into an old closed theatre or drive in, sure there are a few around…
Hey mike do you have any old movie theater stuff you would sell? I see your theaters very well
bet with digital now it is closed CHUCK..
“OTHER SIDE OF MIDNGHT” opens April 30 1976.
I think the PASTIME is a dinner theatre too, like the PAL theatre in LOUISVILLE,GA.
I was in Sandersville this past Sunday and the Pastime appeared to be closed. I asked my cousin about it and he thinks it might be closed for awhile. Mike, the other theater you mentioned is around the corner, the Arcade.
The one sheet frame was like we had at Columbia 1 and 2 it snapped down on all four sides.Glad i drove down there and rescued it,from a very trashy theatre,There was another theatre across the street. But it was dry cleaning business i think.
Looks a little better in the 2008 photo than the 1986.
I walked in the old Pastime theatre back in the Middle 90’s seats tossed around like a hurricane came though.THe screen shot. Trash every where. One sheet frames thrown around. I did grab one of the one sheet frames and took it home figuring no one would ever care about this place.
I was told Sandersville had another theatre down the street? I am glad its back in operation ,Isn’t the KNOX theatre in Warrenton suppose to reopen like the PAL and PASTIME?
Next time I go down to Sandersville I will make some pictures of this and the Arcade.
That’s a cool chainsaw story Jesse.
take a picture of this theatre also and post a link.
If you don’t know how to, just set up a (flickr.com) acct. (its free)
and put it there. and I will post it here.
For what it’s worth, here’s an aerial photo. The theater shaped building by the red dot is the theater. I tried to locate theaters on one of the local search engines, but it kept referring me to assisted living facilities. I’m going home.
