The Sunset Theater was listed as operating from at least 1926. It was part of the Harris Theatrical Enterprises chain by 1941, and they continued to operate it until at least 1967.

I was wondering if it’s possible that there was a theater with a different name at the site of the Sunset Theater on 125th St. My family lore has it that my grandfather, Martin McDonnell, operated a theater there sometime between 1913 and 1918. Because the information is a bit murky I have not been able to verify this. Thanks.

This website has a photo identifying the Sunset as the current La Gree Baptist Church. This would place the Sunset closer to St. Nicholas than the address above.

I suspect the La Gree Church building might actually be the Palace St. Nicholas theatre and annex instead, which is not yet listed.
Any ideas?
Thanks LM! That makes more sense.
The 1937 Film Daily Yearbook lists as De Luxe theatre at 125th street and St. Nicholas. I suspect it was this site as the Sunset is listed as well.
Looking at this again, the De Luxe must be the West End.
A theatre adjoining the West End Theatre was being constructed in 1903 according to the NYT.
Any photos anyone.
