Teatro Colonial

Construction began in 1937 and it opened on 1st June 1940. The Film Daily Yearbook 1941 edition mentions that ‘the Cine Colonial, a neighborhood house owned and operated by Oscar and Samuel Granat, enjoys the destinction of being the world’s largest theatre, seating 7,200.’ I suspect this was an exageration, as my records show it seated 5,287 in 1945.

The exterior was elaborately decorated in a Spanish Baroque (almost church like appearance), whilst the same theme was carried out in the auditorium which had an Atmospheric style.

Later known as the Teatro Colonial, it was still operating in 1971, but eventually it was closed. The building was abandoned and became a ruin.
