The Hillcrest Drive-In opened its gates on August 12, 1953 with “At War With The Army” and “Red Head From Wyoming” along with an unknown cartoon and newsreel.
Boxoffice, March 30, 1970: “With the opening of the Hillcrest Drive-In, Langley, as an Odeon theatre, Frank (Marshall) is now supervising the house along with the Odeon Westminster Drive-In and the Clova Cloverdale”
The drive-in also had a swap meet.
I made 4 trips up here in the final years. What a fantastic drive-in, I miss it so much. My first night here in 2000: Where The Heart IS, X-Men & Fight Club ( A Fox program) We had thunder & lightning that night. By the time Fight Club was over at 4:15, only 12 cars were left.
the new Twilight down the road in Aldergrove has the same layout. They seperated the snack bar & booth though, and have had problems keeping the grass ramps maintained. It’s not quite the old Hillcrest, but glad the Daulat family has kept the drive-in tradition going in the lower mainland.
I believe it was sold and moved.
I have a SURREY DRIVE-in located in this city in 1956….parking 392 cars and owned by GAYLAND AMUSEMENTS…
The Hillcrest closed September 28, 2003, making room for a new residential development. A new drive-in is currently being built and will open in the Summer of 2005. The Twilight Drive-in will be located about 15 minutes from the Hillcrest. Their website can be found at http://www.twilightdrivein.net
