Opening as a hall for military drill purposes, the programme changed to multi-arts in 1987 and once more in 1990 as an art house. It is located at the rear of the Mayflower Theatre(former Empire/Gaumont).
Films to see were of foreign import as well as British and American cult classics. On Sunday afternoons, Chinese cinema hit the screen under the series title of "Made in Hong Kong." The Gantry also hosted workshops for computer art films and the ever-growing Southampton Film Festival.
The Gantry was closed and demolished in the early-2000’s

Notes from “100 Years of Cinema in Southampton” by Patrick Hayward; The Gantry is now demolished but with (hopeful) plans to be the site of a new development incorporating “rehearsal space and studio theater for the nearby and massive Mayflower (ex-Gaumont/Empire) Theatre.
I remember the Made in HongKong series from 94-95 also : Zu Warriors, City on Fire, Spooky Encounters, The Killer of course. All the Kitanos up to Sonatine.
Also where I discovered 4th gen chinese film makers like Zhang Yimou and Chen Kaige, not forgetting the beautiful Gong Li. I would have never seen Red Sorghum, Farewell My Concubine without this place.
Other beauties I remember were Cronos, Dazed and Confused, Reservoir Dogs.
I’ll always have a special place in my heart for this theatre.
