Monroe Theatre

The Monroe Theatre was opened in 1912. By the late-1970’s it had been renamed Monroe Art Theatre and was playing adult movies. The former Monroe Theatre and an adjoining building were destroyed in a fire in 1995. At the time, the Monroe Theatre was home to a nightclub, the Copa.

In the late 70s, the Monroe was showing generic porn during the day and Deep Throat and The Devil in Miss Jones every night.

Here is a photo of the Monroe Theatre in its pre-porn days (probably 1961, judging from the movie on the marquee.)

A book published in 2006, “Preserving Paradise: The Architectural Heritage and History of the Florida Keys,” by George Walter Born, gives the address of the Monroe Theatre as 623 Duval Street. The building currently at 612 Duval was clearly built long before 1995, while the building at 623 is clearly of modern construction, though built in a vintage style.

I agree, Joe. The Monroe was across the street (east side of Duval) and down a bit from the Key West Picture Show, which was at 620 Duval.

I was just looking at the 1985 photo. The building has the date at the top — 1912. I think someone saw a part of that number and guessed it was the street address…
