News About This Theater
- Nov 22, 2013 — Curtain call for Hollywood?
Gorgeous little jewel box of a theatre that is located in Kitsilano, a particularly picturesque section of Vancouver. (Possesses a balcony as well.) It’s family run and has been in operation since 1935. Since the 1990’s has only shown second run double bills. Has the most delicious pastries and the freshest, tastiest popcorn this side of heaven. Lovely place to sit and dream.
The Hollywood Theatre was closed on May 29, 2011, but re-opened in 2013 as a special events venue, playing classic movies. It was closed again on November 22, 2013. It was reopened in January 2021.

That’s sad to hear. I hope whoever bought the Hollywood considers refurbishing and reopening it for movies and puts as much pizazz into it as was put into the Rio.
Jason’s link is no longer active for the article in the Vancouver Sun (“Curtain closes a last time at Hollywood Theatre”), but here’s a functioning link: http://bit.ly/wk9VtK
Also, here’s a nice blog post about the Hollywood: “The Hollywood Theatre: Gone But Beloved By Many”) http://bit.ly/yemNUj
I used to enjoy going to their cheap double features on Tuesday nights with a group of friends, one of whom used to drive back up from Bellingham (> 1 hour away) to join us. It was that great of a destination.
The Hollywood is back showing movies, but more as a special event. They recently played Back To The Future and Lawrence of Arabia in 35MM.
The Hollywood is showing what may be its final film. You Can’t Take it With You, playing 20-22 November 2013. The property owner is then shutting the doors as he plans to gut the interior of this Heritage B listed building and lease it to a fitness centre. But it’s still not too late! Visit http://savethehollywoodtheatre.com/ to find out what you can do. Let’s try to save it as an arts space for the community, where we can watch 35mm projection, digital cinema, listen to music, rehearse plays and gather!
It would be a shame for the Hollywood to go out this way. Good luck to the faithful fans to help keep it going. I made 2 visits here, saw a movie in ‘08. Got the grand tour from Vince as well.
Still unsure of the status of the Hollywood. The church group that was in talks to purchase it has seemed to have fallen through.
Hollywood Theatre lives to see another day. A development going in next door has agreed to breathe new life into the building by turning it into a mixed use venue.
Hollywood Theatre is reopened and ready to go. 35mm and Digital Laser Projection.
The rear of the Hollywood auditorium space has been turned into a lounge area with bars on both sides of the lounge, while what had been the balcony section has also been turned into an upper lounge area with a bar as well. Most notably, in the main seating area, some of the seats have been turned to face toward the rear, which defeats the purpose of being able to face the screen when movies are playing.
Posted a shot of the auditorium from the official website. This theater technically IS open as a bar/lounge right now but is not showing any movies.
I’m not a fan of this redesign as along with ScreenClassic’s comments about the seats facing away from the screen, it seems like there will be major distractions throughout for any type of feature film presentation with a bar and lounge area right in the auditorium area.
