There will be an event tomorrow, Saturday, Feb. 4, 2016 in the restored space that was once a barber shop in the front of the Tallchief. Featuring four local Native Artists, the event is the first in the partially restored building since the 1960’s!
The Tall Rex first appears in a Movie magazine in 1929 along with the Liberty Theatre.
The Fairfax Community Foundation is quite a ways along on the restoration of this historic building. It was built by Alex TallChief, father of the famed American Indian ballerinas, Maria and Marjorie. It was built while they were young. Maria is quoted as saying that she always knew she was a star, her name was in lights in downtown Fairfax!
This theatre is still standing, address is 248 N. Main St., Fairfiax, OK 74637.
This theater is shown on a 1933 fire insurance map at 248 N. Main. Another theater (name unknown) is shown at 212 N. Main as early as a 1924 map. An even earlier theater was shown at 229 N. Main.
