The Cosy Cinema was built on the site of Burrows Saddlery facing the Market Place and it opened on 23rd February 1922. Also on offer in the building was a buffet for patrons & billiards in a room above the entrance. It was a long narrow building which seated a total of 780 in stalls and circle.
The Cosy Cinema was operated as an independent until around 1947 when it was taken over by the Nottingham based S. Graham Circuit. It closed in April 1961 with Bob Hope in "They Got Me Covered". Star Cinemas group of Leeds took over and converted it into a bingo club which lasted until 1988.
The auditorium of the building was then converted into an indoor market known as the Cosy Market. The snooker (billiards) hall still operates upstairs. The imposing facade is still virtually unaltered, but there is little left inside the building apart from some decorative plasterwork in the entrance ceiling.
