Sitting on the main road in the village of Oystermouth about 10 minutes outside Swansea city centre. Originally built on the seafront in 1906 as the Kursaal, the Tivoli Picture Theatre was opened in 1939.
It was closed on 9th December 1964 with “Paris When It Sizzles” and “Shadow of Treason”. It briefly became a bingo club, then became a penny arcade/amusement arcade for at least 40 years. In 2015 the interior was stripped back to the bare brick walls and the asbestos roof was removed. The building is to form part of a new development of an up-market shopping mall to be known as Oyster Square. The façade (which is in good condition) will be retained.

In 2015, a major new development was begun on the site of the Tivoli Cinema, which was rebuilt in 1930s on the site of The Kursaal Entertainments Hall and the (New) Mumbles Cinema. (Note confusion is caused as Mumbles has had two ‘New’ Cinemas).
Known as the ‘Tiv’, it is fondly remembered by many of us, who patronised it in the 1940s and 1950s and by the younger generation who remember it as an amusement centre. In the near future, the site will take on another guise, which will be known as The Oyster Wharf.
