BREAKING NEWS: Cinema de Lux in White Plains to closeThe Business Journal has learned that the Showcase Cinema de Lux at the City Center in White Plains will be closing. The last day of business will be Sunday, Oct. 29, the Business Journal was told. The 15-screen theater was a major attraction when it opened in on June 25, 2005, and has been a focal point in the city’s downtown ever since. It opened with approximately 3,200 seats but the seating capacity was reduced over time as the theater installed wider, more luxurious seating. An IMAX auditorium was added where movies could be seen on an almost wall-to-wall, ceiling-to-floor screen. The most recent IMAX attraction to play at the theater is “Oppenheimer.”
When asked about the closing, White Plains Mayor Tom Roach said, “I think it’s of course a sad day but not really a surprise. I think it’s a reflection of where the entertainment industry has moved. A combination of streaming and I think Covid really accelerated a process that was already underway.”
Roach said that the theater operation occupied a lot of space at City Center but he understood that talks are taking place with possible new tenants.
“When the film industry starts releasing films onto TV at the same time they’re putting them into theaters I think it’s a problem,” Roach said. He also expressed a hope that White Plains will not be without movies downtown for very long.
this theater has gone downhill since they changed the seats. Almost all auditoriums have some of the worst sound I have ever heard, No bass and very low volume. One auditorium in particular has no sound coming from the left speakers and another has all sound coming from the surround speakers instead of the front. I remember how great this place was when it first opened.
Please update official name is Showcase Cinema de Lux City Center 15 as per website

Question, this theatre show IMAX 15/70 films before IMAX Digital. Is this a big IMAX screen or similar to baby IMAX but show IMAX 15/70 before IMAX digital started. I’m looking at old ads in 2004 and 2005 in the Daily News and this theatre show IMAX movies, IMAX Digital didn’t start until Eagle Eye in 2008.
Oh, I knew immediately where the bad back came from! Never knew a projectionist that didn’t have some wear and tear from film handling. From running arcs in the middle of summer in a hellishly hot, cramped DI booth to hauling prints to unreachable levels, it was always fun, but never easy. Now, convince the State in Easton PA that there are qualified projectionists out there so they will start a series of films. I’m told that is the reason that they won’t/don’t offer a film series. Good Holidays to you as well!
Rstewart, I was just trying to explain the reason for my bad back. I didn’t take no offence to what he said. I guess I didn’t see it that way. But I guess you know what its been like. My first years were spent lifting those 6000' reels, then in 84 I started with platters. And many of those years were spent in a 10 and 14 plex theatres where it seemed you moved something after every show. But you must admit, as I did, that those were some good old days and I wouldn’t trade them for anything. Have a good holiday Rstewart.
markp, I’m so glad to see you responded to hdtv267’s insensitive post. I stewed all last night after seeing it and intended to post something today about it. I’m going to guess he has never moved a print or carried film cans up steep steps, ladders and all of the other tortures that theater designers had devised. My guess is his heavy lifting involved a 55" Samsung…certainly never 3 or 4 prints into his car, then across the parking lot and up to he booth!
No. Carrying 250 lb prints of film all around the building did. And it wasn’t just that theatre. Many of the Loews Theatres that had half the theatres on one side and half on the other didn’t help. I started out in 1976, so I had a lot of film miles in my back by then. But its still something I’ll never forget. I miss film. I miss running film.
I worked here as a projectionist from late april 2004 till dec 31, 2004. something like 5 separate projection rooms, and walking down hallways and the alike. A real nightmare, but I made a go of it until my back went out and I was taken to White Plains hospital. I never went back.
