Cineworld Cinema - Brighton

Planned by Cineplex Odeon, this 8-screen multiplex opened on 3rd May 1991 as the MGM. It was taken over by the Virgin Group in July 1995 and was re-named Virgin. It was taken over by UCG in October 1999 and renamed UGC.

It was re-branded Cineworld in 2005. Seating capacities in the screens range from 357, down to 208 with a total capacity of 2,103. In late-2019 re-seating began which reduced the seating capacity to 1,263 and the cinema was redesigned to the plans of architectural firm Earle Architects.

Planning permission granted for a refurbishment, designed by Earle Architects (who seem to be responsible for many Picturehouse cinemas).

New signage, canopy and exterior cladding, and a small Starbucks added to the foyer.

To include Screen X.

Unfortunately the Brighton & Hove planning website is rather broken so I can’t access any more of the documents to find out more details.

The first Cineworld project by Earle Architects, who as Zappomatic says, have been involved with a number of Picturehouse sites.

Earle Architects – Cineworld Brighton.

The page includes a “cut-away” 3D plan of the cinema, renderings of the ScreenX and another auditoria, and the facade. Also included is a cross-sectional drawing of one auditorium, which shows the new stadia (and toilets underneath the rear end!) built off the existing sloped floor. Most rows in this auditorium are 1200mm (slightly under 4ft.) back to back.

I visited this cinema today. What an improvement! Large screens excellent raked seating Good sightlines and curved scope screens in at least 3 of the auditoriums.
