The Grand Kinema was listed as open pre-1937 with a seating capacity of 615. It was independently operated and continued into the mid-1960’s. By 1980 it was listed as the Civic Hall with 406 seats and had occasional stage shows. Later back in full time cinema use as the Grand Cinema, it continued until late-2006.
It was purchased by the Christian group Oasis Trust and was given a 3-million Pounds transformation into a Community Arts Centre, which includes, a recording studio, dance studios, rehearsal rooms and a cyber cafe, all under one roof. Seating is now provided for 350 and there are facilities for film and live performances. The Grand Music and Arts Centre opened on 25th March 2008 with a performance by soul singer Heather Small (formerly of M People). In June 2008, Oasis pulled out of managing the Grand, although they will still have some input into the activities. A new management team were appointed.
The Grand Cinema is a Grade II Listed building.
